Welcome!

Welcome!  I came up with this idea because I realized I have an idea about what original Star Trek is like, but never systematically watched the show.  What episodes I have seen were mostly 22+ years ago.

Born in 1973, I grew up with TOS and TAS in daytime syndication.  I watched the films as they were released–I was pretty young for the first one, but I remember the ads for it in the back of comic books, and I had a Willard Decker action figure.  My junior high school English teacher stocked the classroom with James Blish’s episode novelizations, so I devoured those.  I suspect, however, that I’ve seen less than half of the TOS episodes in broadcast form.

This was enough to make me a Trek snob, who turns up his nose at the later Trek series (most of which aired while I was in college/graduate school and had no reliable access to television). Not to mention J.J. Abrams’ action-centered “reboots,” which make me long for the time when Star Trek was about hard science fiction, humanitarian ideals, and a vision of a better future.

But is it really all that good?  What about the flaws, etc.?  One thing is clear to me–if I take the time to watch it, I want to write about it, and have the opportunity to free associate and crack jokes with a community of worthy people.

So join up!  I’ll post the new episode threads and throw out some thoughts.  Mostly, I’m looking forward to seeing where the conversation goes.

I would always watch the classic series with my dad; afterward, we would discuss the ideals behind each episode’s plot as a way to bond and for him to help me learn more about how to be a better person in the world I was just beginning to take notice of.

(It’s also nice to see someone else who wants to see the humanitarian ideals and hard sci-fi not take a back-seat to the action, too.)

My dad is a space guy, but he was always a little more into science than science fiction–I don’t remember watching Star Trek with him (although it might have happened).  I should try to recruit him for this–I don’t think they have Netflix, though!

I have never seen TOS episodes in any systematic way. But, when TNG aired, my parents were super excited about it (not that they watched TOS as it aired because they were too young) and we watched it as a family together. So, I think this will be fun!
