Welcome! I came up with this idea because I realized I have an idea about what original Star Trek is like, but never systematically watched the show. What episodes I have seen were mostly 22+ years ago.
Born in 1973, I grew up with TOS and TAS in daytime syndication. I watched the films as they were released–I was pretty young for the first one, but I remember the ads for it in the back of comic books, and I had a Willard Decker action figure. My junior high school English teacher stocked the classroom with James Blish’s episode novelizations, so I devoured those. I suspect, however, that I’ve seen less than half of the TOS episodes in broadcast form.
This was enough to make me a Trek snob, who turns up his nose at the later Trek series (most of which aired while I was in college/graduate school and had no reliable access to television). Not to mention J.J. Abrams’ action-centered “reboots,” which make me long for the time when Star Trek was about hard science fiction, humanitarian ideals, and a vision of a better future.
But is it really all that good? What about the flaws, etc.? One thing is clear to me–if I take the time to watch it, I want to write about it, and have the opportunity to free associate and crack jokes with a community of worthy people.
So join up! I’ll post the new episode threads and throw out some thoughts. Mostly, I’m looking forward to seeing where the conversation goes.
