I rated seven episodes 4 or above, with three 5s. My choices (alphabetically):

“Explorers.” This sweet Sisko/Jake story is about engineering, listening, and discovery. The solar ship is beautiful. More like this, please.

“Improbable Cause.” An assassination attempt on Mr. Garak draws Odo into a web of intrigue involving the Obsidian Order. What’s not to like?

“Life Support.” Vedek Bareil’s swan song is about making sacrifices for something bigger than yourself, and contains fine performances (especially by Nana Visitor).

“Past Tense, Part I.” DS9 goes back to the dystopian past of San Francisco to ask what makes positive change happen.

“The Search, Part I.” The season premiere introduced the Defiant and took us to the Gamma Quadrant. Emblematic of the best of DS9.

    Honorable Mention: “Destiny,” “The Adversary.”

OMG what an amazing season. It is really hard to choose. I’ll expand on this as soon as I can but I just wanted to say that so much happens in this series! And there are so many great characters to follow. Not sure if I’d rate Explorers as highly as you do, but the rest are all aces in my book.

    OK, more shortly!

    Top 5:

“Life Support”: Ah, Bareil, I miss you!!!!!

“Destiny”: Is Sisko the Emissary? Is he just a guy? I love watching him and Kira deal with their conflicts over this question. What a unique storyline.

“Through the Looking Glass”: OK, it doesn’t make sense, but I love the mirror universe anyway. It’s a look at what is best and worst in us.

“Shakaar”: Kai Winn is Kai Winn, and doesn’t win for a change. The seeds of her power are also the seeds of her downfall. I loved the scene where Bajorans beat their plowshares into swords, metaphorically.

“Past Tense, Part I”: A look at what is best and worst in us, again. I wish that Part 2 had lived up to the promise of Part 1.

I kind of loved all the episodes though. Even the bad ones offered something new about the development of an interesting character. Notice how my favorite episodes have nothing to do with the Dominion arc. It’s fine but what makes this show shine is the dynamic between Bajor, a developing democracy/theocracy, and DS9, a polyglot Federation outpost. I love how the interplay of cultures is dramatized within the main characters. I can’t think of any other show that has this same type of dynamic.

I love that most of our choices are different! These are all good episodes.
