3.16 — “Prophet Motive”
Plot: Quark and Rom receive a visit from the Grand Nagus and are horrified to discover that he has developed a moral conscience. Meanwhile, Bashir is nominated for an award and pretends that he doesn’t care.
Thoughts: This is the worst episode of DS9 in a very long time. I find it obvious and unfunny. Worse, it is quite dismissive about Bajoran religion. Can you imagine how important the Orb would be to Kira?
The opening scene, in which Quark uses his leverage in a business deal to take sexual advantage over a female, has not aged well.
And the B plot featuring Bashir is… totally devoid of interest. At least for the sake of continuity they should have connected the nomination to some medical miracle he worked during the course of the show. It’s boring! Internet sources explain it was inspired by the disappointment the production team experienced when TNG was nominated for an Emmy in its last season and some of the team couldn’t help but get their hopes up before their inevitable loss. Which is a story more interesting than the one they filmed.
I guess we’re supposed to be excited about meeting the prophets again for the first time since “Emissary.” But they are just here to be diminished by the dumb Ferengi plot.
1 out of 5 orbs that should have been saved for a more special occasion.
