3.7 — “Civil Defense”

3.7 — “Civil Defense”

Plot: During routine maintenance, Jake and O’Brien trip a security code in DS9’s ore processing plant that activates a Cardassian security program that tries to kill them and ultimately destroy the station.

Thoughts: DS9 turns into an escape room puzzle! That’s fun, but beyond the general concept there is not a lot here. The script would be better suited if it had been written for a video game. It’s unfortunate that finding solutions to the “puzzles” the characters have to solve requires them to spout meaningless blocks of technobabble.

At least the episode has Garak and Gul Dukat, who get some of their worst dialogue of the series to go with some trumped up interpersonal conflict which seems arbitrarily inserted to give the characters something to talk about.

Garak gets less interesting as he becomes less inscrutable. So I can’t support making him into some kind of master of intrigue who retains power and connections to do virtually anything. The episode doesn’t bother to examine the most interesting question, which is why he’s interested in helping (if he’s helping).

The structure of the episode reminds me of TNG 5.5, “Disaster.” I’m sad to report that the TNG episode is better.

2 of 5 discarded baseballs.

Yes… Gul Dukat hitting on Kira seems ridiculous on SO many levels…

My favorite part was the sniping between Odo and Quark… “See what your conscience has done to me???” (or whatever similar thing Quark said) but it was a small bright spot in an overall super-boring ep. I guess it was mildly interesting that Dukat also got shut out of the systems in the end too… a comment on paranoia-genic Cardassian culture.

I do think that DS9 does technobabble moderately better than TNG in that the words seem less completely divorced from anything real. It is not a high bar to clear, of course.

This is at best a place-holder episode, and I’ve come to expect so much more.

I agree! DS9 seems to have lost its way, to a degree, this season. I wonder if this is a byproduct of integrating staff from TNG (Rene Enchevarria and Ronald D. Moore).

The online sources say that Nana Visitor was very opposed to Gul Dukat hitting on Kira. She always reminded the staff that to her, Dukat will always be Hitler.

There’s a dynamic going on here like indulging your evil uncle who does bad things but the family excuses it with an eyeroll and a private laugh–like the way many people used to look at Trump. That is not the way to handle Dukat, or any of the serious issues raised by the former Cardassian occupation of Bajor.

Go, Nana Visitor! I get the feeling that I would really like her in person.

I could not agree more… evil needs to be confronted, each and every time. Dukat is interesting and I have a feeling there is more to him than complete evil… but this episode does not particularly showcase that.
