3.2 — “The Search, Part II”

3.2 — “The Search, Part II”

Plot: Sisko and Bashir are rescued from an escape pod and return to DS9 to find Admiral Necheyev negotiating a peace treaty with the Dominion. The treaty leaves out the Romulan Empire and Bajor. Meanwhile, on the planet of the Changelings, Odo explores his connection to his lost kin, while Kira snoops around to find out their secrets.

What I Like: Most of all, the growing connection between Kira and Odo. But for God’s sake, don’t hold hands while you use the transporter! it’s frakking dangerous.

Otherwise, I saw through the premise and twists of this episode from the start. Part II doesn’t have the pep or interest that Part I had. I found Sisko’s sense of disquiet in the station, where everything seems to be wrong, to be effectively creepy, if reminiscent of last season’s “Whispers.”.

What Isn’t Good: The set up from Part I led me to believe Part II would be considerably more exciting.

What Makes It Star Trek?: It doesn’t feel very much like Star Trek. It feels like an adventure show where Odo gets betrayed by the person he thinks is his friend. There doesn’t seem to be any larger lesson, moral, or examination of the human condition. I imagine the revelation about the identity of the Founders will be very important for the rest of the series.

Rating: 3 of 5 Arbazon Vultures.

GARAK!!!! Dude, I love Garak. Especially the part where he says he saw the bit on a movie once then promptly dies. Laughter to horror in seconds. Also his coy flirtation with Sisko was riveting. Plus, Sisko gets really mad at Admiral Necheyev! Always fun to see Avery Brooks throw sparks, ever since he played Hawk on Spencer: For Hire (remember that??).

I actually felt there was more here of interest than in Part I because of more character development and less space battling. Sure, it’s predictable, but I loved seeing Odo get super-excited about becoming a tree, get sad about leaving his new family… the only thing I was kind of disappointed by was that the Founders, who are presumably going to become the next Big Bad, are sooo much less personable than, say, Kai Winn. I feel they need a bit more motivation to become bloodthirsty torturing universe overlords than “the solids teased us and were so mean!’.

Overall, it was fun. I agree it would have been nice for it to tie into some larger theme, but maybe it does in that Odo chooses to value fairness over blood, even though it’s programmed in his genes. It feels like a more meaningful existential choice than whether Kirk is going to wed Octavia or go back to saving the universe.

That said, the episode would have been more powerful if the Founders had had some compelling reason for taking over the Universe. Odo’s choice would have been harder then too.
