Closing thoughts are welcome about TNG and the state of Star Trek as we prepare for Generations and the start of DS9 Season Three. We’re 45% through Trek, not counting the upcoming Discovery episodes. 325 episodes down, 400 to go.

Looking back, TNG hit its high point in Season Four. Some even better episodes came later, but TNG was never as consistently good or just fun as it was in the years 1990-1991.
Let’s not kid ourselves, it could get pretty bad. At its worst, the show didn’t take science fiction seriously, didn’t know what to do with its characters, leaned hard on technobabble, and harbored disturbing undercurrents of resentment and misogyny. At the beginning it was unstable. It’s hard to forgive lowlights like “Ménage à Troi,” “Skin of Evil,” “Angel One,” and “Journey’s End,” to name a few.
But I get it. As a whole, the seven core main cast are likable, varied, easy to watch, and capable of delivering a punch with the right material. And there is just enough unforgettable material. The Borg! All the Romulan episodes. Riker undercover. The Cardassians and Bajorans. Lwaxana, starting with fourth season. Watching TNG took a while, and had its moments of trial (Season One! Season Seven!), but it was not a waste of time.
So help me, I’m looking forward to Voyager and the rest of DS9. They say DS9 gets better after its first two seasons, just like TNG. It’s pretty great already. I’m a little afraid of VOY, but excited to see a female captain, which seems if anything more important now than when the series aired in 1995-2001. And there’s a lot of Borg material ahead. Onwards!
Have fun in your journey! i had luck to have my wife watch with me a full trek Marathon which lasted years.
When i first watched Voyager, i couldn´t get into it, but by season 4 i couldn´t put it down, it was outstanding!
I agree… TNG was a bit of a trek, no pun intended! I still miss TOS… it was messy in a good way and such a cool exploration of what it means to be human (it had its clunkers too, but even the clunkers felt mostly entertaining). I am loving DS9… such an awesome show, I remember crying when it was over the first time. Yup, dreading VOY and Enterprise a bit, but so exciting that we’ll have a new series to watch also as we continue our marathon adventure!
Randi Cohen I started hating Voyager,
at first but it gets better, MUCH better.
Haha thanks Victor Hugo Carballo, that gives me hope!
Randi Cohen at some time, they start realizing their own potential. The episode “Blink of an eye”, left me stunned for weeks: http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Blink_of_an_Eye_(episode)
That’s sixth season…. I guess we’ll get there eventually. 🙂
Kevin Black take your time, it took me a few
decades 🙂
Looking forward to contrasting “Wink of an Eye” with “Blink of an Eye”!
Twice as good!
