Lower Decks (episode)

7.15 — “Lower Decks”

Plot: In a take on Upstairs, Downstairs, this episode features ensign characters who look up to the senior staff and dream of promotion. As Ensigns Lavelle, Sito Jaxa, Taurik, and Alyssa Ogawa try to prove themselves, intrigue develops at the borders of Cardassian space as a mysterious figure beams aboard from a derelict shuttle.

Thoughts: I had high hopes for this episode. Conceptually, it at least tries something different. It’s too bad the characters are wooden and forgettable. Like the senior staff, they are cardboard cutouts with no thoughts or ambitions except for their jobs. Compared to the main cast, they have less personal charisma.

The familiar face here is Nurse Ogawa. I suppose we spend more time with her in this episode than in all the previous ones. So do you feel like you know her now? Not at all. We learn she has stilted conversations about her love life with Beverly which do nothing but make it sound tedious. Life aboard the Enterprise seems less appealing if this is what passes for gossip and coworker comradery. We don’t even get to meet her supposed beau Lt. Powell, right? Confusing.

The “star” is Bajoran Ensign Sito Jaxa, who I did not remember from TNG 5.19, “The First Duty.” Worf sticks his neck out and vouches for her, which is strange since she appears to lack all self-confidence and all but tells everyone that they are singling out the wrong person for attention or promotion. She’s terrible at unarmed combat. I understand the premise is that Worf is being unfair, but that was a very poorly choreographed scene. The only time this character moved me was when she shows up for the final mission sporting a giant facial bruise, which makes me queasy about exploiting violence against women.

Taurik seems awfully pissy for a Vulcan, but he is at least more entertaining than the rest. Lavelle seems to have fallen off the same “Aw shucks” turnip truck where they found Geordi. Looking this quartet, I couldn’t help but wonder at the inordinate amount of time they must spend doing their hair before reporting to duty.

Ben the waiter was… all right I guess?… but garishly dressed. I could not help but think the episode would have been better if he had been replaced by Guinan.

The episode could have been used to cast new light on the senior staff, but is chiefly used to reveal that they are huge jerks (at least Geordi, Riker, and Picard are jerks, while Worf and Crusher are just stilted and uncomfortable with subordinates). Then later scenes call this conclusion into question by positing that maybe they aren’t such huge jerks after all, except they kind of are.

Nice try, I guess. Wikipedia notes that the concept of an episode focusing on background characters instead of the principals is carried forward in “The Zeppo” episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1999) and several episodes of the new Doctor Who.

2.5 of 5 updos and bottles of futuristic hair product.

Well, I liked the ending (dark for star trek). And I found the idea neat, although the execution, as you point out, was lacking. I agree both seniors and juniors need some help character-wise!

I did appreciate the ending. I wasn’t sure if they were going to stick to it or find her alive at the last second, and I didn’t really know that until the credits played.

pattimcb31, like Ensign Ro, right? What a contrast between her and this lot. I just didn’t find Sito Jaxa credible as a Bajoran (or anything else really).

She and Kehleyr are my two favorite star trek characters. 🙂 Followed by Odo and Spock in a tie for 3rd.

That’s really something considering how little we see of each of them! I understand there is one more Ro Laren episode coming up. Supposedly Voyager has some strong female characters in Janeway and 7 of 9, but I haven’t seen VOY yet. That speaks to a certain failure of Star Trek to be sure.

Oh pattimcb31, I am experiencing these series in real time as we blog them. Before we started this project, I had only watched the Original series, TNG Season One, the movies, and a handful of random TNGs from later seasons. Maybe less than 5 episodes of VOY and DS9. I have still never seen ENT. So the answer is DS9 yesterday and TNG tonight. I’ve seen absolutely everything up through February 13, 1994, and nothing after that except the films (and I haven’t seen any of the TNG or nuTrek films since their first theatrical release).

What to do about Discovery when it finally comes out is an open question. If we stick to “everything in release order!” we won’t get to it for about six years.

    Yes… What shall we do??+

    Some thoughts:

It was also my impression that these four main characters were wooden and forgettable. This ensemble-show idea, of showcasing the background characters for an episode, was done so well by CSI (Lab Rats, You Kill Me, Field Mice), but I really think it doesn’t work here. I second the comment that it makes the main cast look like a bunch of jerks. Geordi, especially, is usually so nice to his subordinates, (unless they’re hitting on him) and Picard’s reversal (“You screwed up in the past and I won’t give you a fair shot/I brought you here to give you a fair shot”) feel like they were written by someone who had no idea who those characters were.

Also, I hate the “uniform” worn by the bar staff. I keep getting the impression that the majority of Star Trek costume designers are geniuses on fit and construction, but are colorblind and have no sense of design. It also bothered me that apparently Geordi’s uniform was from a different dye lot than Taurik’s.

Thanks for putting your finger on that! Yes, so not Picard! He is earnest to a fault unless compelled to act like a spy.

The whole head games dynamic. I was treating you unfairly to see if you would stand up for yourself, proving that you deserve to be treated fairly!

Could have just told her to stand up for herself…. Nah, too simple, too clearcut…

Kevin Black , I totally forgot Kira. She is pretty great and should be in there somewhere. I remember not loving Janeway or 7 of 9. Too Gates McFaddenish (too soft and too attractive… I feel both justified and unjustified in having that reaction). We shall see.

Just popped to say that new picture is almost certainly her.

Also I,m glad they substituted miles for sito.

Her killing her cellmate would be heart breaking.

  15. Kevin Black Avatar

I don’t understand. Miles for Sito?

  16. Polly Ann Avatar

    Yeah hard time remember?

  17. Polly Ann Avatar

That was supposed to be sito instead in the original draft.

Thankfully the powers that be decided otherwise.

You’re referring to a 4th season episode of DS9. We aren’t there yet!

I,m saying originally hard time was supposed to be about sito not miles.

And the dream sequence was for real including killing her cellmate.

That would have been awful and ruined a star trek character I adore.

This community is rewatching Star Trek in release order, and for many of us (including me) we’re watching for the first time. As of this writing, we are nearing the end of DS9 Season Three. I know nothing about “Hard Time,” but I believe you.

Kevin I,m watching kethinov fan favorites much more fun and totally random too!

And best of all all the series are on Netflix so all I have to do is dig out the movies! LOL
