2.3 — “The Siege”

2.3 — “The Siege”

Plot: Sisko and his Starfleet officers prepare for the arrival of armed Bajoran forces on Deep Space Nine while Kira and Dax fight to break through to Bajor and deliver the proof of Cardassian interference in the Bajoran civil war.

Thoughts: This is a dramatic, action-oriented episode, not an idea episode. This is my favorite dialog exhange:

LI NALAS: I’d die for my people but…

SISKO: Sure you would. Dying gets you off the hook. Question is, are you willing to live for your people?

I also like the banter between Kira and Dax:

DAX: (referring to the Palukoo) I suppose you used to make them your pets and sing songs about them around the campfire.

KIRA: No, we used to eat them.

The Bajoran fighter is a nice set piece and good special effect work on a budget. Kira and Dax get to do some Han Solo stuff.

Less good: I feel like the stories of Jaro, Vedek Winn, and Vedek Bareil don’t pay off at all. Even the General’s exit is anticlimatic. Maybe on the page this all seemed more exciting? The way it is shot, it looks like Kira hasn’t even won her argument with the council. Then, later, we hear that she did over a radio broadcast.

Li Nalas–did they kill him just because they realized the role was badly miscast? Killing Li was the obvious, tired move. It would be much more interesting to make him live out the role that he doesn’t want, and to follow the character over future episodes. It’s important to resist the obvious, like TNG did last week when Geordi failed to save his mother. It makes for better drama.

But, good special effects. 3 of 4 Holosuite traps.

LOVED the scene with Dax and Kira in the fighter. Somehow being around Kira gives Dax much more of a personality.

Yes, Li Nalas casting and death are both annoying, and we are cheated of our triumphant moment when Kira actually wins the argument.

I also liked the Bajoran commander, who did a nice job of seeming decent, and the cute resistance trickery of the Star Fleet contingent (is there actually a Star Fleet command anymore? It doesn’t seem like they exist… perhaps they’re inconvenient to suspenseful plotting.)
