2.1 — “The Homecoming”

2.1 — “The Homecoming”

Plot: DS9 returns with a three-part story arc. A smuggled message alerts Major Kira that a Bajoran resistance leader, thought to be dead, is alive and imprisoned in a labor camp on Cardassia IV. Meanwhile, a Bajoran terrorist group called The Circle begins operations on the station, and Jake schedules a date.

Thoughts: DS9 is back, it’s bigger (expanded promenade sets!), and ready to go with an episode bursting with guest stars, subplots, and the best outdoor prison escape scene affordable on a TV budget. I like the small bits, like Dax acting as Sisko’s counselor, with authority and experience as befits a Trill. DS9 is smart to lead with a Kira-centered episode returning to the theme of the Bajoran-Cardassian conflict.

The genre of the episode is more political soap opera-drama than anything close to Original Trek, but since it’s good, I’ll take it. Frank Langella as Minister Jaro is a great actor who I saw once in a Noel Coward play on Broadway. I look forward to part two.

One of the things that struck me is Bashir’s use of point to point beaming within the station. Is that going to be a thing? It’s a heck of a potential convenience, and weapon.

4 out of 5 portentous earrings.

Yes… Kira’s take on “hooker” was not obviously sexy to me and hard to believe that the Cardassian would buy it so easily, but otherwise an awesome scene.

Yes, I loved this whole 3-parter. Compelling. I did wish that the role of hero she saves were played by someone else… the actor they chose is not that engaging.

Oh, also, where the heck is Starfleet when Sisko is deciding to randomly break rules and ally himself with the Bajorans? And why is Cardassia reacting so apologetically?

Also, Vedek Bareil… super-attractive in an 80’s kind of way but weirdly unemotional and disengaged during Kira’s prophetic vision. I like that this dynamic between them remains unresolved. And Kai Winn is delightfully saccharine/evil.

I understand the filming in that area was super super hot and they were losing time on their day, I wonder if they had more planned for the “hooker” scene? Although according to script it’s improvised in the moment, not planned. Bareil and Winn don’t show up until the next segment. 🙂
