I learned from the extras on my Blu-ray set that the writing staff all believe that this is the best season of TNG, when everything came together. I’m not sure. There are a lot of varied, memorable episodes, but were they fully baked? I gave “Tapestry” a 3, “A Fistful of Datas” a 2.5, and other big concept episodes like “The Chase” a 3.5 and “Rightful Heir,” with the installation of the resurrected Kahless as Klingon Emperor, a miserable 2.

There were some good ones though. My favorites, in alphabetical order by tradition:

“Chain of Command, Part I.” This is the best one, isn’t it? It took Captain Jellico to shake things up, make us look at the crew with fresh eyes, and get Troi into a standard uniform. And that’s not even mentioning Picard’s standoff with Gul Madred. Although I don’t remember how much of that was in Part II.

“Descent, Part I.” I gave this an exuberant 5 stars last week because of its excitement and cinematic qualities. We get a fresh take on the Borg, an episode which takes Data seriously, and I still can’t wait to see what happens in Part II (I hope I’m not disappointed).

“Frame of Mind.” Maybe this is the best one. Riker goes crazy! A play within a play! A great stylistic departure and series best performance from Mr. Frakes.

“Second Chances.” Holy cow, I have two Riker-centered episodes on this list. The common thread I am seeing in these episodes so far is that in different ways they push the characters they feature (Picard, Data, Riker) farther than they have been pushed before.

“Ship in a Bottle.” Professor Moriarty steals the show after remaining trapped in the Holodeck for four seasons. This comes closest to an episode premise that could have been written by Phillip K. Dick.

Honorable mentions: “Chain of Command, Part II,” “Relics,” “Quality of Life,” “Timescape.”

I liked Frame of Mind (definitely), Second Chances, and Ship In A Bottle. The other two were decent but not memorable because there weren’t many major ideas associated with them, just exciting action.

Overall, I felt this season was “meh”. Perhaps I’ve just lost my taste for TNG when I can watch DS9 instead (which has characters that I respect and care about! Yay!).
