I remember that when it was over, I cried!
There is just something about DS9… it feels by far warmer and more accessible than the other Treks to me. It helps that Dax and Kira are strong and command respect, unlike any prior Trek females (except Dr. Pulaski and K’Ehleyr and Ro… but they were not regulars).
But more than that, the actors just convey a warm fuzziness and realness that I feel has never been equalled before or since. I think it helps that this one is located on a planet with internal politics which can be uncovered over the seasons perhaps.
Cisco is also a lovely Captain (my favorite Captain probably… not because I really got that great of a read on his personality but just because the actor playing him is so forceful and awesome). And Dr. Bashir… I remember having a crush on him way back when.
I could do without the Ferengi. But… Odo. He sort of fills the Spock/Data niche nicely, and with a bit more mystery. I am a huge fan of Rene Auberjonois since “Benson” (remember that??).
Overall, I just cannot wait to actually watch this show all the way through! Yay!!!
I basically haven’t seen a frame of DS9–maybe I saw a couple random episodes when it first aired, plus I watched “Trial and Tribbulations” back when we covered “The Trouble With Tribbles” and “More Tribbles, More Troubles.”
My feelings, in some order:
1) I must be nuts to start watching/reviewing a new 176-episode Star Trek series. Yikes!
2) I can’t wait to start it! I’m really curious to see how they went about imagining a new series, different from TNG and the TOS model. I’ve heard a lot of good things.
3) On the other hand, I’ve heard that all of the latter-day Trek series start out rough for their first couple of seasons. It’s certainly true of TNG. And that the quality slips a little bit with each new series. There are probably a lot of bad episodes ahead! And TNG is a lot better than it used to be, but not exactly a model of consistency, and it has drifted away from some of the things that make TOS special.
4) I have to know everything! NOW! It’s bizarre, in 2016, to be an expert in everything that happened in Star Trek until January 1993, and not know anything that happens after. I can’t have proper conversations and debates with other Trekkers! I’m halfway tempted to go to the big 50th anniversary Star Trek convention in Las Vegas at the beginning of August, but I wouldn’t even know who most of the actors are. We have been at this for 3 years, but we have only watched one third of Star Trek! That’s crazy.
5) William Shatner should tell me to get a life.
This community is a lot of fun for me, and I look forward to this new frontier. I hope new (or old!) companions will join us.
I do remember Benson! I used to love that show. There are two Benson actors, right? Or I guess the one who played Pete went to Voyager instead of DS9.
It ran from 1979-1986: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benson_(TV_series)
Wow… good catch there! I didn’t realize it was Pete under the make-up!
VOY totally kicks butt of TNG IMO, although I do think it took a bit of time to come into its own.
It is crazy how long it takes to watch all of Star Trek! What other series could have possibly taken this long?
And they’re going to start laying new track in front of us next year! Maybe we can incorporate that without slowing down?
I’m game, as long as I can catch it on hulu or something… we stopped our cable a long time ago…
Like TNG, DS9 takes a while to warm up but then it becomes really good because it shifts from standalone episodes to long story arcs.
Yay Dara and Paul! We’re still doing Monday and Thursday, BUT it will be TNG on Monday and DS9 on Thursday, so if you want to just watch DS9, it will only be once a week.
Because of the way they released the premiere and the next three episodes, we’re actually doing those 4 episodes in two weeks, but then only once per week after that. There’s a new scheduling post.
Maybe I can cast a cantrip and summon R. Alex Reutter, Sarah MacMillan, Allen Knutson, Katharine Bond, Cory Lea, Bill Testerman, Melissa Simms, Don Glover, Michael Hanscom, Jennifer Douwes, Geoff Gill, Pearl Young, Michael Goodall. DS9, starting next Thursday, only one episode per week.
