Hi there!

Hi there! Kevin linked me here from the comments section on one of the viewscreen.com TOS rewatch posts, so I thought I’d check it out.

A little background on my ST fandom: My father was 9 when Star Trek premiered in ’66, and he pretty much became an instant fan for life. As a kid, my greatest exposure to Trek was through the movies; my siblings and I would watch our VHS copies of II through VI over and over.

Every now and then we would watch a TOS ep with my dad, but as a kid I didn’t think they were as much fun as the movies. Thus there were only a handful of TOS episodes that stuck with me into adulthood (Trouble With Tribbles, Devil in the Dark).

I was a big fan of TNG as a kid, but I was fairly young for the early seasons and so I don’t remember a lot of details. Again, there are really just a smattering of episodes that stand out in my mind, mostly from the later seasons (Yesterday’s Enterprise, Ship in a Bottle, All Good Things).

DS9 premiered right after I turned 11. I eagerly tuned in to watch the first episode….and was immediately turned off to the show after the scene where it is revealed that Sisko hates Picard. To my little pre-teen brain, Picard was the BOMB, so my thought was, if you don’t have time for Picard, I don’t have time for you. I never really watched DS9 after that, although many of my friends were into it. Voyager and Enterprise likewise mostly slipped by me, unwatched.

So, a year or two ago I decided to watch….everything. It’s been slow going (although I anticipate picking up the pace here soon), and right now I’m about 5 or 6 episodes into season 3 of TOS. It’s been a revelation….my kid self was turned off by the production value, but I’ve been very impressed with the series watching it now as an adult. I’m excited to watch TNG through, as I really consider that “my” Trek, and yet there’s so much of it I haven’t seen. I’m also excited to go back and give DS9 a fair shake, as many of my friends tell me it is the best Trek. I’m doing release order so I plan on alternating episodes of TNG and DS9 when I get to that point. I’ve also been following various rewatches as I go (AV Club, Viewscreen, Tor.com, and now Relive the Majesty!).

Sorry, that was longer than I expected. Glad to be here!

Welcome! I hope you will post your thoughts on tos and tng as you continue rewatching. It is always interesting to hear different perspectives!

Welcome, Robert! We have been having some similar experiences. I look forward to your contributions.

I feel like a hypocrite saying this, because I personally am far to anal to do this, but if you are inclined to catch up, you really could just skip TNG season 1 and 2, or if you want to hit the highlights and get some backstory, just watch the “best of” episodes from our end-of-season recaps, or the ones at TheViewscreen.

I also agree that release order is the way to go.

I don’t think I knew the AV club is doing this.

Ha, yeah I think I am also too anal to skip episodes, even when everyone warns me they are terrible :D.

And the AV Club rewatch is over now; it was done about 5 years ago: http://www.avclub.com/tv/star-trek/

    How’s the rewatch going, Robert?

Slow :(. I still have 10 episodes left in TOS season 3. But in a few months here I should have much more free time, and can possibly even watch 5 to 7 ep’s a week. So maybe I can eventually catch up…

I hope you will feel free to share comments on episodes we have watched in the past!  I always find those interesting.
