As I said when I was ranking the episodes–not too bad. I gave 12 of 26 episodes a 3.5 out of 5 or better, and another four episodes got threes. Outside of the episodes I ranked as best (or honorable mention) were some others that I have pleasant associations about, like “The Most Toys,” “Hollow Pursuits,” and even “The Price” and “Booby Trap.” Yes, I would like the show to be more consistent, and more brilliant. There is a danger of slipping into “fun and forgettable,” when the standard set by TOS was more or less “mind blowing and world changing,” week after week.
Also, the ability to put out shows like “Ménage à Troi” effectively puts a cap on how good the show can be overall. It’s a shame that Star Trek in this era wasn’t ready to break new ground or show us what a better world might look like when it comes to gender relations. This qualifies as a real blot on the record.
But let me not just damn TNG with faint praise. We saw some great acting and great art design and special effects this season. Creating positive visualizations of the future isn’t easy. We’ve made it to the point where I feel like, with a few adjustments, this is a future I want to live in, and a crew I want to hang out with. Based on having watched only Season One, I spent half my life trying not to roll my eyes when someone told me they love TNG and it meant a lot to them when they were younger. Now I get it. I’m looking forward to Season Four. I’m looking forward to DS9 (starting in another 7-8 months?). I like the show. That may not sound like very much, but it’s a big step forward.

Oops, forgot Hollow Pursuits in my best of listing! It was annoyingly sexist but so original and had awesome costumes… definitely worth acknowledging it was pretty entertaining.
Yes, what an incredible job TOS did of creating memorable storylines that said something about the world we live in… and how horribly sexist TNG is, to the point where overall I would say it is worse than TOS! (It does have more female leads, but they are sexualized more often than not, and rarely seem to play a useful role in plot development).
That being said, TNG gave us the Borg and a fascinating exploration of the Klingon Empire, so for that, I have to give them some props. I am starting to like it too… but still can’t wait for DS9, as I recall liking that series so much better…
