I agree. ST:TNG operated from a principle that every crewmember was trained to at least a basic level of proficiency and that their concerns, when voiced, were at least valid enough to investigate. In the workplace I’ve learned that when you assume everyone is a competent adult and you set up policies and procedures that treat them as competent adults they tend to behave as competent adults. When you create policies and procedures that treat them as incompetent children they behave as incompetent children. Expectations beget performance.

    interesting indeed. perhaps this aspect of the series becomes more evident later. i do note several episodes in which Wesley is not believed and spends the episode trying to convince people.

    also i would like to see the characters earning some of the respect that is so freely given to them.

    It does put a new complexion on Gene Rodenberry’s edict that the main characters are not to have conflicts with each other. This is usually cited as a sign that GR had slipped into his dotage, and was sabotaging the show by placing unreasonable, undramatic restrictions on the stories. But it does give the show a certain flavor (modeling a tranquil, respectful workplace/family environment that might be outside the everyday experience of some viewers/fans) which may be more meaningful that I have previously considered.

    If no conflicts means the bones/spock dynamic would not have been allowed, or even the way bones calls kirk on things, i don’t think it was a good call. conflict is necessary for growth and health of a relationship, although it is important for it to occur in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
