Star Trek Phase II: 4×08 — “Kitumba”
Plot: The Organian Peace Treaty has been shattered, and the Federation intercepts Klingon plans for a massive military assault. Kirk is assigned a desperate peace mission to the Klingon home world, with a traitorous Klingon to guide the ship through its planetary defenses. Yo-yo-ing reversals, incursions, and retreats await in this adventure deep behind enemy lines.
Thoughts: Where have you been? This episode has a pretty great script, very good action, and plays right into the strengths of this fan series by harnessing the amazing energy of fandom with countless extras, a multitude of great sets, and a showcase of impressive special effects involving gigantic enemy space armadas never seen before by me.
I’m not sure I followed every beat of the story, or that every beat was defensible. I don’t know what point they were making with all the disintegrations at the end of the story, for example. I don’t like the direction they have taken with McCoy, and and some of the actors are a bit grating. But still, this was a pretty great episode.
Some things I noticed: it was a nice touch in the beginning to recreate the same space station model that was used in “The Trouble With Tribbles.” This is the first time in the fan film series that we see Klingons with forehead ridges, and the script includes a nod to the retconned explanation for this discrepancy provided in Star Trek: Enterprise. I caught other references to Enterprise. The reference to “President Archer,” would no doubt make more sense if I had ever watched the show. Hey, at the rate this community is going, we may get to start it in, uh, six or seven years? Ulp.
Rating: Definitely well worth the trouble.
