1.9 — “Once Upon a Planet”
Plot: The Enterprise returns to the shore leave planet, last seen in TOS 1.15 — “Shore Leave.” McCoy, Uhura, and Sulu’s pleasant soujourn on the surface starts to go awry after they find a marker revealing that the caretaker of the planet has passed away. In his absence, the computer that operates the planet’s machinery has developed some strange ideas about how to run things…
Thoughts: “Shore Leave” was one of my least favorite episodes of TOS. I like this episode a bit better. It has some good laugh lines, and a fairly prominent role for Lt. Uhura. She sings! I’ll have to dig up my TOS season one posts to remember how many bonus points to assign for any episode that contains Uhura singing.
In context, the computer’s line “It’s time for a change” is fairly chilling. Credit for that. Did you catch the crewmembers on the bridge wearing seatbelts? What a concept!
Fortunately, in this episode we get to see more of Lt. M’Ress. Unfortunately, her voice is quite annoying. She sounds like a phone sex operator.
I think that’s all I have to say about this one.
