Star Trek New Voyages: V01 – “Center Seat”
Plot: Newly returned from officer’s training, Lt. Commander Sulu returns to the Enterprise and resumes his seat on the bridge. An intercrew rivalry inspires vocal sparring.
Thoughts: This 10-minute short is designed to just be a teaser, introducing the new cast member playing Sulu, and taking the opportunity for some light banter and character work (as well as showcasing visual effects). Character work and banter, so far, are not the strengths of this fan series (owing to the limitations of the actors involved), so I don’t love this episode. It’s charming enough, considering it doesn’t take much time.
I’m cheating and looking up Lt. DeSalle in Memory Alpha. Ah yes–a minor crewmember and assistant navigator who appeared three times in TOS, in “Catspaw,” “Another Side of Paradise,” and, most memorably, “The Squire of Gothos,” in which he joins the landing party on its visit to Trelane. I rate this vignette as “skippable.”
