What can you say about Star Trek? It has changed the world in so many ways. When it is good, it’s not just irresistible and fun, but also important. Trek is entwined now in our international consciousness (some of the largest conventions are overseas!), and bound up in how we think as a global community about peace, social justice, and the future. Even when it’s bad (it’s certainly bad sometimes! And it did not always succeed in being ahead of its time, especially in its depiction of women in the workplace and sexual politics), it’s still interesting.
We should know. We’ve not only watched these episodes, but thought critically about them, in the context of their original time (1966-1969) and the present day. We’ve written about them, debated their merits and demerits, and used them as a lens to reflect on our culture, our lives, and the differences between us. I’ve personally written about 45,000 words just in the initial episode responses–which works out to about 560 words per episode–and although I’ve probably gotten less sleep over the past year as a result, I’ve also found it to be tremendously rewarding. Keeping to the schedule has been a test all on its own. It’s hard to explain how important this has become to me, or why. I’m actually looking forward now to watching TNG, which I did not think would ever happen. Part of it has been the opportunity to reconnect with friends that are far away, and to just to express myself in a different way than I get to at my day job and quotidian life. But mostly, it’s Star Trek. There’s just something special about it.
Thank you for particpating, those who are plussing, watching the shows, commenting, or just reading along. On to the Animated Series and fan films!

After recently compiling all my top lists for each season, I thought I should combine them into a top 10 episode list for the entire series. This seemed like a good thread to post it in. And maybe one day in the far future I’ll combine my top lists from each series into a top list for all of Star Trek!
Counting down to my favorite episode:
10) “Mirror, Mirror”
9) “Amok Time”
8) “The City on the Edge of Forever”
7) “Charlie X”
6) “Journey to Babel”
5) “Is There in Truth No Beauty?”
4) “The Squire of Gothos”
3) “A Taste of Armageddon”
2) “The Trouble with Tribbles”
1) “The Devil in the Dark”
And while we’re at it, why not my bottom 5 from all of TOS. Counting down to my least favorite:
5) “The Empath”
4) “The Alternative Factor”
3) “The Savage Curtain”
2) “The Omega Glory”
1) “Plato’s Stepchildren”

It’s interesting to see different responses! I like “The Devil in the Dark” too, but not as much as you, while it is one of Randi’s least favorite episodes. Meanwhile, I couldn’t stand “A Taste of Armageddon.”
