This is odd. In Season One, my favorite episodes were also the episodes which I wanted to watch again, immediately. With Season Three, with the exception of my favorite episode, I feel I would rather rewatch the honorable mentions. Listing is alphabetical by tradition:

“All Our Yesterdays” This episode was exciting, darn it, with great moments for Spock and McCoy.

“Day of the Dove” Just solid. A good Klingon episode, which articulates the values of Star Trek well.

“Elaan of Troyius” I’m a sucker for episodes about transporting diplomats, and for good character-based stories.

“Is There in Truth No Beauty?” This was my favorite. Speaking of good character-based stories! This was also the deepest philosophical episode.

“The Enterprise Incident” You can’t go far wrong by using Romulans, or writing a convincing love story for Mr. Spock (as in the first episode on this list).

Honorable mention: “The Lights of Zetar,” “The Way to Eden,” and “Whom Gods Destroy.” These episodes were just too fun—especially the last two. Almost honorable mentions go to “For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky,” “The Paradise Syndrome,” and “The Empath.”

LOVED the Enterprise Incident.  Romulan Commander simply awesome.  She is by far my favorite love interest of Spock’s.

Day of the Dove… who could forget the image of Klingons and Kirk laughing and slapping each other a little too hard??

All Our Yesterdays – just an all-around cool episode.  Great world-building, and Spock getting primal is entertaining if not completely justified.

Whom Gods Destroy – so memorable and colorful, so many images from this episode have stuck with me.  It is flawed but unforgettable.

For the World Is Hollow… completes my favorite five, for giving McCoy some very interesting character development and moral dilemmas.  His love interest is a strong and interesting woman also.

    First some Honorable Mentions:

Best Title: “For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky”

Episode I really really wanted to love but couldn’t quite: “The Cloud Minders”

Episode where I didn’t mind the over-moralizing, plus I love Frank Gorshin: “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield”

And now, counting down to my favorite:

…you know what, screw it. I’m gonna do it: 5) “Turnabout Intruder” – Maybe it’s because it’s just so fresh in my mind, but I’m sorry, this episode really engaged me. Sorry if that makes me a raging sexist. Yes, it showcased some of the less-than-ideal attitudes of the time, but after sitting through so many boring, endless, repetitive season 3 episodes this was such a breath of fresh air. Some episodes felt like homework, like I had to force myself to get through them just so I could claim I watched 100% of TOS. In this case, however, I was pretty well riveted start to finish, and I count that for a lot. Scotty, Sulu, and Chekhov all got moments to shine, which they usually don’t get. I particularly loved Scotty’s moment talking in the hall with McCoy. Shatner’s performance was great. I also thought Sandra Smith’s performance as Kirk was fantastic.

    4) “The Enterprise Incident”

    3) “Spectre of the Gun” – I loved the set design and the direction, particular of the shoot-out and leading up to the shoot-out.

    2) “All Our Yesterdays”

    1) “Is There in Truth No Beauty?” – My top two Season 3 episodes, both written by the same person….and they were her only 2 Star Trek scripts! Amazing.

I think we are pretty close on these. I defended “Turnabout” against its pitiful reputation, but didn’t list it as a top five.
