Oh–this episode has the last filmed appearance of Yeoman Rand in the series. Because of the jumbled air dates, we will see her one last time, however, in next week’s episode.

I’m going to need to do this all again in chronological order of when the events happen in-universe.  🙂

I loved this episode!  The wedding that starts us off really does give the sense that this is a community with real lives at risk.  I love that the groom calls his fiance “Mister”, although otherwise it was an odd bit of banter between them in the engine room.

Interesting to see Rand so obviously putting the moves on Kirk with him not encouraging it.  How common was that in the 60’s?

I am a huge fan of the Romulan commander.  What a wonderful character.  The plot was very nice, subtle in how the two play cat and mouse.  The dialogue was nice also, although perhaps a bit overblown at times (I love Bones’s little monologue, “don’t kill the one named Kirk”, for how evocative it was, although it also did not really make sense as far as supporting the captain in that moment.  Bones seems to pile on pressure rather than try to relieve it.)

And, the way Spock cuts off the thanks of the bigoted officer at the end of the show is, to coin a phrase, fascinating.  If he were human I think I would diagnose him with schizoid personality disorder.  Because that comment was not just logical, it was positively rejecting of an emotional connection, in that he was not required to make it at that time.  To me it argues that he is not just emotionless but actually repelled by emotion due to fear, disgust, or some other strong motivation.

This post is a magnet for misplaced comments that belong to other threads! I should append a comment about how weird it would be if they had cast DeForest Kelley as Spock. I like to think that was idle conversation, and De had the sense not to pursue it and wait for a more fitting role. Makes for fun idle chatter at conventions, though, which is where a lot of these stories come from.
