Thanks for joining… I almost think I should move up the date for the first episode.  What’s your relationship (if any) to TOS?

I think four days to give people a chance to join is a good start.

Is the idea that we will watch them at the same time or just have watched them by the date?

I can’t do the liveblog thing–bad at multitasking.  Preferably watch before the date, and I’ll post a thread in the morning and we can chew over it.  The threads will be there for people who want to catch up later.

That sounds good for us too.

My earliest memory of the original episodes was from being at the sitter’s on Thursday nights when it was airing. It was a busy household and everyone dropped everything and gathered around the television when it came on. I wasn’t there often enough to have seen them all, and I was too young to really have a clue about the societal implications, etc. What I remember was the sense of wonder, and the feeling of community because the neighbors and friends came over to watch together. It was a “big deal” tm.

Back when Netflix first put all the episodes up for instant streaming, any time I was up late and needed to “get sleepy” we would watch an episode. So, while I theoretically could say that I’ve seen each episode in the last couple of years, it’s more realistic to say that I’ve seen the first ten to twenty minutes of each episode.

I’ll probably not be able to keep up with the two-per week schedule. Once I fall behind, I’ll try to just come along and comment in the episode posts as I catch up. Hope that will work for this system, as I suspect I may not be the only person who won’t have time to watch that often.

I saw them occasionally with my father on late-night TV in the late ’70s. Then saw a whole bunch freshman year, in the company of people who could recite them verbatim.

While I can’t honestly say I really remember my earliest Trek experiences, they’re part of our family lore: Me at two years old, sitting on dad’s lap, and when the Enterprise whooshed across the screen in the opening credits, I’d point somewhere backwards over my shoulder and say “speesh!”

I know I’ve seen every episode at least once, most (probably all) multiple times. Grew up on them in syndication, watched them at home and with friends, and later on my own. Wanted for years to subscribe to the VHS collection-by-mail deals you’d see on TV, but never could talk my parents into it. Used to have many on DVD back when they were still in the VHS-based habit of issuing them two per disc, before full-season sets caught on, but sold them off years ago. Really want to pick up the Blu-ray sets, just haven’t gotten around to it…yet. Have the James Blish adaptations in my Star Trek print library.

Basically, it’s in my blood, almost literally. While I recognize DS9 as the best all-around Trek series, at heart, I’ll always be an old-school, original series Trekkie/er.

I come from a family of real peaceniks, so the Gene Roddenberry vision (in general, if not the specifics) was very important to me.  My dad used to complain that the Star Wars movies were too violent–I think he saw each of them only once when they were released (despite the fact that he worked in aerospace).  He was definitely a hard-sf and not a space opera guy (who didn’t even like space opera).  This no doubt contributes to my initial reaction to Wrath of Khan (“this isn’t a REAL Star Trek story”) and also helps to explain my resistance to J.J. Abrams’ new take on Star Trek (the crew of the Enterprise are action heroes who kick ass for the glory of revenge!).

I’m going to be watching on Netflix Instant–I don’t think there are cuts, although they are the remastered editions with replaced special effects.

I really would like to pick up the Blu-ray sets sometime soon — they actually give the option of toggling between the updated effects and the originals. Could be quite entertaining, and I’m glad that unlike some people (*ahem*lucas*ahem) they preserved the original versions.

(This group actually has me wondering how soon I could spring for the set…it’s only $100 on Amazon right now…*twitch*twitch*.)

    Viewing parties in Ellensburg!

We can totally all make the trek over twice a week, right?

    😀

When did I first see Star Trek?

Geez…I really have to think about that one! I think I may have just missed the original airings or to young to know what it was I was seeing (I was 2 when the show debutted and  about to turn 5 when it was cancelled!) I did grow up on the reruns, though. Read the original James Blish novelizations of the show, watched the cartoon Saturday mornings, collected the Mego action figures in the ’70’s (getting the Enterprise playset made that Xmas was one of the best ones I ever had !)  If it had to do with Star Trek, I was all over it!

Welcome, Jim! When did you last watch TOS?
