The prospect of paralysis leads him to demand the assistance of his friend, Will Riker, in a ceremony of ritual suicide, much to the horror of his son Alexander. A neuro-specialist wants to try a risky surgery procedure, but Dr. Crusher has qualms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thoughts:<\/strong> I have to outsource to Randi the question of whether this episode raises interesting questions of medical ethics&#8211;allow the trial of a procedure that may kill a patient who is in no risk of dying? I am too busy feeling offended on behalf of all my friends with mobility challenges or histories of suicidal ideation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy life as a Klingon is over.\u201d \u201c[Worf&#8217;s] life ended when those containers fell on him.\u201d Making the journey \u201cfrom contemplating suicide to accepting\u201d life with a disability is a bridge too far. Whaaaat?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dialogue assigned to Picard does him no favors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were asking \u201cwhere\u2019s Alexander?\u201d long before he finally appeared. Klingons have a curious conception of honor if it means orphaning a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was taken aback by this exchange between doctors: \u201cThat\u2019s what this is really about isn\u2019t it? Lt. Worf!\u201d These lines are literally spoken right over the corpse of the refugee that Dr. Russell failed to save. I think it might also be about that. These characters may have the two worst bedside manners in Starfleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wouldn\u2019t it have been cool if the guest star was Pulaski, instead of Dr. Russell?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When did the medical uniforms turn periwinkle instead of blue?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The over-the-top spinal surgery scene made me think of \u201cSpock\u2019s Brain.\u201d I appreciate the reference to cordrazine from \u201cThe City on the Edge of Forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nice feet, Worf!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, too much soap opera, not enough science fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2 out of 5 extracted spines.
