To what lengths will Garak go to prove his new loyalty to Tain and the Obsidian Order? Meanwhile on DS9, Sisko must decide whether to obey orders.

Thoughts: As good as the first part? No, but not bad, either. IMDB claims that this episode contains the most involved special effects space battle ever depicted up to this point in televised Star Trek, which took 21 days to shoot. I guess they were still shooting models and not CGI?

While the action is upgraded from last week, the psychology is not as intricate. Garak is placed in a simple position in which he cares too much about Odo to execute Tain’s order, and despite his great powers of dissimulation is ill pressed to conceal the fact. Both Odo and Garak want to go home, but won’t sacrifice all their principles to do it.

This is the second Star Trek torture scene after TNG’s “Chain of Command,” unless you count the Ceti eels from Wrath of Khan. Two is enough.

I want to know more about the intrigue relating to Tain’s personal secretary who Garak reached out to last week. That doesn’t really go anywhere.

Here is a piece of dialogue I was interested in:

GARAK: Oh, there are a number of people I intend to look up when we get back. For instance, do you remember a Gul named Dukat?

TAIN: Dukat? Oh, yes. The business with the arms merchant. I take it you’d like to have him eliminated?

GARAK: The thought had crossed my mind.

Does anyone remember what the “business with the arms merchant” refers to? Or is this something we haven’t encountered yet? I don’t remember Dukat operating as an arms dealer.

I feel like Sisko risking a general court martial to thumb his nose at Starfleet is perhaps the least surprising part of this episode.

The Founders: “After today the only real threat to us from the Alpha Quadrant are the Klingons and the Federation. And I doubt that either of them will be a threat for much longer.” I look forward to the continuation of this story, especially as Klingons become more integrated in DS9’s story next season.

3.5 out of 5 offers to breakfast.

http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/The_Die_is_Cast_(episode)

[9
18
post-5372","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-star-trek-relive-the-majesty-ds9-episode-threads","tag-kevin-black
["GET
