But Curzon is dead, and Jadzia Dax must decide how to feel about the Klingon convention of ritual revenge and the promises made by her Trill predecessor.

Thoughts: The return of old lions is an unusual bit of fan service for TOSsers at this juncture of the franchise. Kor (John Colicos, then 65), Koloth (William Campbell, then 70), and Kang (Michael Ansara, then 71) come from “Errand of Mercy,” “The Trouble With Tribbles,” and “Day of the Dove.” They are almost too unrecognizable under the heavy Klingon makeup, which of course they didn’t have in the Original Series.

This episode is interesting, and good for Dax, with some nice touches in the script by the estimable Peter Allen Fields. It’s nice to learn more about Curzon, and his role in brokering the peace between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. Jadzia Dax is still relatively new as a joined entity, and she has decisions to make that will define her future path relative to such an illustrious entity as Curzon Dax. The more Terry Farrell plays against type, the more I like the character of Jadzia.

The whole seems less than the sum of the parts, however, largely because there is little edge to our distinguished elder Klingons. I don’t buy them as dangerous warriors, and they don’t behave like the Klingons we have grown to know since 1987. Shouldn’t Kor do the screaming thing for his comrades that Worf showed us back in TNG 1.20, “Heart of Glory?” Which did so much to establish the rift in between the old ways and the new in Klingon society, which “Blood Oath” relies on for its backstory.

To make its points about violence and the cost of vengeance land, “Blood Oath” needs sharper fight choreography and a bloodier climax. I’d like to understand better why The Albino relies on human mercenaries. This episode could have been an opportunity to advance our understanding of Klingon social and political culture. Instead the decision to treat its venerable guest stars with kid gloves and not ask too much from them makes it more of a novelty show. I’m glad this episode exists, but I wish they had done more with it.

3 out of 5 broken bat’leths.
