{"id":5261,"date":"2017-02-23T05:44:45","date_gmt":"2017-02-23T05:44:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/212-The-Alternate"},"modified":"2017-02-23T05:44:45","modified_gmt":"2017-02-23T05:44:45","slug":"212-the-alternate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/relivethemajesty.com\/index.php\/2017\/02\/23\/212-the-alternate\/","title":{"rendered":"2.12 &#8212; \u201cThe Alternate\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n        \n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.12 &#8212; \u201cThe Alternate\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Plot:<\/strong> Dr. Mora Pol, the Bajoran scientist who discovered Odo and taught him to mimic humanoid lifeforms, turns up by surprise on DS9 to tell Odo he has discovered a biological trace of another shapeshifter in the Gamma Quadrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thoughts:<\/strong> In a space station, everyone can hear you scream, but at least there are a lot of convenient air ducts to escape into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had fun watching this. The director is David Carson, who directed three of my favorite TNG episodes, \u201cThe Enemy,\u201d \u201cYesterday\u2019s Enterprise,\u201d and \u201cThe Next Phase.\u201d The producers thought well enough of him to bring him in to direct DS9\u2019s series premiere \u201cThe Emissary,\u201d and the upcoming <em>Star Trek: Generations<\/em>, which marked his last involvement with the franchise (since it is coming up soon, I sincerely hope that <em>Generations<\/em> isn\u2019t as bad as I remember). Carson&#8217;s record isn&#8217;t perfect; he also directed \u201cRedemption, Part II\u201d and DS9\u2019s worst episode so far, 1.10 \u201cMove Along Home,\u201d but I guess there are limits to what you can do with a bad script. I bet the tentacle that grabs Bashir\u2019s neck from behind is a David Carson touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Space horror of this type is not something I remember Trek doing before. I like it. It&#8217;s got a <em>The Thing<\/em> or <em>Alien<\/em> vibe. It totally had me looking at the characters and thinking, &#8220;What if it turned into Dax?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also like the complicated relationship between Odo and his \u201cfather,\u201d who can\u2019t quite see him as being good enough. The script is smart enough to let both Odo and Mora be right about some things, although Odo is more right more of the time. In the end, Mora is still family, however imperfect, which Odo needs.
