NBC rejected \u201dThe Cage,\u201d filmed in late 1964, as a pilot. Shatner&#8217;s book says the network thought it was \u201ctoo cerebral,\u201d &#8220;intellectual,&#8221; and &#8220;slow,&#8221; with &#8220;not enough action&#8221; (but he wasn&#8217;t on the show yet, so how would he know?). Majel Barrett, future Mrs. Rodenberry and Number One on the bridge of the Enterprise, \u00a0said that NBC reacted by saying \u201c&#8217;You&#8217;ve got to get rid of the broad. No one will believe a woman second in control of a big star ship.\u201d Her IMDB page says NBC also wanted to axe the Vulcan (&#8220;too Satanic&#8221;), and Gene picked his battles. The network ordered a new pilot in 1965, without Jeffrey Archer as Capt. Pike (see<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allen Knutson&#8217;s post), and TOS didn&#8217;t make it on air until September 8, 1966.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I thought the Enterprise scenes were dreary&#8211;they needed some red shirts to liven it up! Didn&#8217;t like the turtleneck(?) uniforms. Nimoy hadn&#8217;t found his character yet and the rest of the cast was bland. Pike was too negative for me&#8211;always with a big furrow across his brow. Having a female first officer was cool, though. \u00a0What was with the crack about not being comfortable with women on the bridge? Holy mixed feminist messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loved the fax machine on the bridge and the slide projector in the briefing room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a slow start, I thought it picked up the moment the big-headed aliens in dresses showed up. I dug it after that.
