Wow what a great season! My average episode rating was 3.9 out of 5. The lowest score I gave was a 2, to two episodes. By contrast, I gave TNG Season Seven episodes four 1s, five 1.5s, and an average rating of 2.3.

    Here goes, in alpha order:

“Cardassians” This great Garak episode from early in the season is so deft in the ways it makes you care about these characters and the world of DS9. It’s also standing in for “The Wire,” another great Garak episode I could have chosen.

“Crossover” This Mirror Universe episode is the most fun hour of Star Trek produced in the 1994-1995 television season.

“The Maquis, Part II” Filled with action and precise characterizations, this two parter also proves DS9 can take on big stories. Gul Dukat is the only recurring guest star I like better than Garak!

“Rules of Acquisition” Pel, the female Ferengi who falls for Quark and manipulates the Nagus, inhabits what may be the most overtly feminist episode of Star Trek so far.

“Tribunal” It’s the lawyer in me, no doubt, but I deeply appreciate the courtroom satire and our first visit to the Cardassian homeworld.

Honorable mention: “The Jem’Hadar,” “The Wire,” “Necessary Evil,” “Sanctuary,” “Armageddon Game,” so many more great episodes.

Can I just pick all of them?

The Homecoming was great for that prison-break scene.

The Circle is great, for introducing Vedek Bareil and Vedek Winn, who are both super-fun in their different ways.

Necessary Evil is great, because it brings Kira’s character and her relationship with Odo a new level of complexity, plus it’s a fun mystery (with history!).

Cross-Over… probably the best of the bunch, because KIRA. SO hilarious and awesome to see her go head to head with her amazing self.

Whispers is awesome because… just the best and most heart-wrenching ending ever.

    Honorable Mentions:

Armageddon Game is awesome because of how it showcases the O’Brien – Bashir relationship, with some of the best dialogue we get to see from Miles all season, plus skullduggery, plus Keiko as Nancy Drew.

Paradise is amazing because DAMN crazy people can be so self-righteous! And people can have their values shifted so easily… it’s sobering as an exploration of human nature. Plus you have got to love Sisko in this episode.

It is interesting that we have only one agreement on the top 5 and that your top 10 and my top 7 have only 3 episodes in common… I think it just speaks to how incredibly strong this season is. Really which episodes are your favorites is a matter of taste, since they are all so strong.
