Since we’re taking a brief break, it’s been bothering me that we never took the time to do “best episode” rankings for the whole TOS series. I’m not sure how well I can do it now without rewatching some episodes! Here are links to our “best of” threads from the end of each season:

I think a lot of episodes are great that everyone agrees are great, like “The City on the Edge of Forever,” “The Trouble With Tribbles,” “Amok Time,” and “Journey to Babel.” I admit to being especially attached to the episodes I like which don’t have such wide recognition, like “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” “A Private Little War,” “Is There In Truth No Beauty?” and even “Whom Gods Destroy.” How to rank episodes against each other is tricky.

This is esoteric, but much more fun to think about than current events. 🙂

I just went back and looked at my season rankings, and tried to cobble together from those a top 10 overall:

    10) The City on the Edge of Forever

    9) Charlie X

    8) All Our Yesterdays

    7) Amok Time

    6) Journey to Babel

    5) The Squire of Gothos

    4) A Taste of Armageddon

    3) Is There in Truth No Beauty?

    2) The Trouble with Tribbles

    1) The Devil in the Dark

  4. Kevin Black Avatar

These are torturous calls. Some seriously great episodes do not make this top 15 list. I’m excited now to go back and watch the series again, this time in production order. These choices may be idiosyncratic, but they are mine:

    15) The Doomsday Machine

    14) All Our Yesterdays

    13) Space Seed

    12) The Enemy Within

    11) Amok Time

    10) Is There in Truth No Beauty?

    9) What Are Little Girls Made Of?

    8) The Menagerie, Parts I & II

    7) The Trouble With Tribbles

    6) A Private Little War

    5) The Corbomite Maneuver

    4) Charlie X

    3) Journey to Babel

    2) The Naked Time

    1) The City on the Edge of Forever

I might change the order if I watched them all again. 6 of these selections come from the first 12 episodes to air (“The Menagerie” was both episodes 11 and 12). Star Trek was amazing in its first season.
