Open Thread — Star Trek Beyond

While we are tackling Star Trek in release order, and currently stuck in February 1993, we shouldn’t entirely ignore the fact that there is a new Star Trek movie in the theaters. I saw it last night. This is an open thread to share your thoughts.

    Adequate.

I hate hate hate scenes in which a bunch of people come to a realization at the same time, and announce their pieces of it one after the other, as happened just before “Sabotage”. (Which was also silly, but whatever.)

Wow! I totally did not realize this was out. Hopefully I will get a chance to see it soon.

Meh. The nuTrek movies are fundamentally comic book superhero movies with a Star Trek skin. This one had better spectacle and action than the previous installments, and wasn’t as obviously derivative of ST2 and ST6 as STID. OTOH, Krall isn’t as good a supervillain as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Khan. It’s shiny shiny pew pew, designed to be gaped at but not considered. I find it interested how much they lean on nostalgia for the original cast, who had earned it, while this cast still seems uncomfortable in their roles and relationships to each other, and much better in other movies.

The story was basically “We’ve been trapped by a supervillain* and we need regroup and stop him before he destroys our starbase!*” *Because reasons.

But, you know, better scenery, settings, action business and stuff than last time.
