We’re back!

We’re back! What were your top 5 best episodes from TNG Season 4? Cheat sheet below. This is going to be hard (and I might not get around to providing my response right away), because I find I just have more trouble either remembering the TNG episodes (despite having reviewed them), or associating the episode with its title. I’m not sure how much this is a function of TNG being different than TOS, or whether it has more to do with the accumulation of the 201 episodes (not counting the films!) we’ve watched so far in the Star Trek series.

4.1 — “The Best of Both Worlds: Part II”

First Contact – Loved it!  Even though it had Riker.  I am a sucker for “humans through the eyes of aliens” stories.

Family – Pretty freakin’ awesome Picard back-story, acting, and general hilarity and even psychology.

Future Imperfect – I have a soft spot for this one… I love the layered aspect of the illusion and the fact that Riker was totally played for quite a while by a little kid.

Half a Life – Loved how it developed Lwaxana’s character into someone respectable and real, and also how it addressed a current issue… as all the best ST stories do IMO.

Redemption I – Klingons.  Gotta love ’em.

Honorable mention to “Brothers”, which was biblical and fun.

These are alphabetical order, by tradition:

“The Drumhead” — Not everything has to work perfectly for an episode to be a classic. It can be enough to be insightful, courageous, and ahead of its time. I have trouble believing this was written 10 years before nine-eleven.

“Family” — There are big episodes this season, like “The Best of Both Worlds, Part Two,” “Redemption I,” “Reunion,” and my fifth pick below. My three favorites, that I rated 5 out of 5, were at their core about relationships. This episode opened a lot of doors for TNG, and excels either despite or because of being an episode that would have never been done in TOS.

“Half a Life” — If you had told me before the season that my favorite episode would be the Lawaxana Troi episode, I would not have believed you. This is a deep character study, which embraces the sci fi while asking hard questions about what gives life meaning. I get shivers.

“The Mind’s Eye” — I’m including this for great drama and cinematography, and a story that takes risks with one of TNG more underutilized characters (Geordi La Forge).

“The Wounded” — My second favorite. This episode introduces the Cardassians and tells the suspenseful saga of Capt. Maxwell, but the core of this story is about relationships, grudges, fears, cynicism, hopefulness, and regret.

Honorable mentions (all great): “The Best of Both Worlds, Part 2,” “Brothers,” “First Contact,” “Future Imperfect,” “The Host,” “Reunion.”

Ah yes, Reunion. Hard to know if I love that episode because K’ehleyr, or hate it because SHE DIES. WHYYYYYYYYYYY….
