Star Trek Phase II: 04xV4 — “Going Boldly”
Plot: Kirk, played by a new actor (Brian Gross), gives an inspirational speech to his crew at a memorial service for fallen comrades. Later, he has a difference of opinion with a commanding officer.
Thoughts: Well, that was nice, I guess. I recognize Lt. Arex at the navigator station. I don’t have much to say, so I will use this space to reflect on the series as a whole.
This is the last episode for now, but following their successful Kickstarter, there are four more Star Trek: Phase II episodes in the pipeline. I guess we can cover those as they pop up.
It is a reflection of the achievement of this series that it feels like a safe target to criticize. The show doesn’t always feel like real Star Trek, but it does feel like a solid, real endeavor, and extremely impressive as an obvious labor of love for many. Some episodes work better than others. I really like the early episodes, especially the ones with Walter Koenig and George Takei. Kitumba rocked. Some of the lows are pretty low though–reminding us that when you’re doing Star Trek, no one wants to see you misfire.
I wish the producers the best. Keep getting better, keep inspiring other independent filmmakers, keep making amazing productions outside of traditional media outlets. Kudos to Paramount for allowing this to happen. I understand the next fan series for us to watch, Star Trek Continues, is pretty amazing. It’s clear this production paved the way for that achievement, and many more imitators and dreamers to come. Lo these 48 years later, look what Gene Roddenberry hath wrought.
