Star Trek: New Voyages 4×03: “World Enough and Time”
Plot: After the ship is trapped in a dimensional rift, a transporter accident sends Mr. Sulu and a young scientist through a portal into another world. When they are recovered, 30 years have passed for them, and Sulu is accompanied by his daughter, Alyssa. To rescue the ship from danger, the crew must unlock a memory hidden in his mind for three decades….
Thoughts: Fans, fans, fans. Where does the money come to do this? To make special effects that beautiful, with perfect computer models of not just the Enterprise, but the Excelsior? To construct a separate bridge set styled after Star Trek VI, and movie-era costumes for a whole new crew? To attract guest stars like George Takei, Grace Lee Whitney, and Majel Barrett-Roddenberry as the voice of the ship’s computer? I’m more than impressed.
The actors playing the big three characters irritate me because they aren’t Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelley. The actor playing Scott may, in fact, be doing a better Scottish accent than James Doohan, but it’s not the right accent for Scotty. This is strangely jarring. Also, the read on Kirk’s character that he’s a lonely guy who needs a woman in every port frustrates me. The character lost definition and stature towards the end of TOS, but that’s not the Kirk I know from TOS season one and the first two thirds of season two. It may describe Kirk from the reboot movie.
I have to give the episode a high pass, however, if only because I’d be happy just watching George Takei read the phone book. Never mind that the whole premise makes little sense. The actress who plays Alyssa gave a fine performance.
Rating: contrived, sentimental, but very sweet.
